Brazil represents nearly half the size of the South-American Continent, being only smaller than Canada, Russia, China and the United States of America. It is the 5th country in the world in territorial extension, with 8. 514.215,3 km², the equivalent to 5.120 thousand squared miles. It borders eleven countries in South America (except from Chile and Equator).

World Map - Brazil is located in South America. Discovered on April 22, 1500 by the Portuguese sailorman Pedro Álvares Cabral, Brazil remained as a Portuguese colony until September 07, 1822, when it reached its political and administrative independency.

In 1889, it has become a Federal Republic. Today, Brazil counts with 26 States, a Federal District (Brasília) and thousands of Municipalities. The City of Brasília, known worldwide by its modern and unique architecture, is the official Brazilian Government headquarters, ruled by Presidential Regime.

Directly chosen by the people for a four-year mandate, the President can be reelected for the same period of time. Governors and Mayors rule the States and the Municipalities, respectively, with an identical mandate to the President’s, including the reelection aspect. Brazilian Economy has been stable.

The Country has been growing and stands on the 9th place in the world’s economical growth rank. Brazilian States located in the East and South regions, where the first immigrants arrived nearly five centuries ago, are the most economically developed States.

Each and every visitor should try the delicious barbecue “churrasco” (usually served in all-you-can-eat buffets, including a big variety of meat and salads); the traditional “feijoada” (black beans with bovine and pork meat, rice, cabbage, “farofa” - a kind of manioc flour - and sliced orange), accompanied by the "caipirinha" (regional alcoholic drink made of sugar cane rum “cachaça”, sugar and lemon juice); seafood and regional fish dishes and many others.
